Jerry Deewood

I Got The Blues

In the midst of World War II and the close of the Great Depression arrived Jerry Jerry DeewoodDeewood. Jerry was born on February 9, 1943 in Bruges, Belgium. His mother, Marcella, an accomplished pianist and his grandmother an outstanding singer just knew that their bundle of joy would surely show Marcellasome love and artistry for music. But his father held different views and opinions on this subject; thus, his mother and grandmother won out and we are thankful today for that. Jerry grew up listening to Frankie Laine, Frank Ifield and later Bill Haley and the Comets, who had the big hit "Rock Around The Clock". His Elvis Presley roots began at an early age since his grandmother sang a lot of Elvis songs.

Our Belgium singer started performing in the 1960's and signed on with record labels like Philips, Polydor, EMI, MFP ... Classic rock & roll and pop music based on the American model, with a repertoire of his own songs as well as covers from international songwriters. Jerry was nominated by the Belgian Artistic Promotion (BAP) to represent Jerry and SherrillBelgium at MIDEM, the international music festival in Cannes, France in 1999, 2000 and 2001 with original songs penned from his hand. Jerry has performed in many countries such as France, Greece, The Netherlands, Spain, the USA and of course Belgium.

His love for Elvis Presley's music introduced him to a tenor singer, named Sherrill Shaun Nielsen. So, in December 2004, his dream came true, he attended a concert that featured Sherrill and Brenda Nielsen – VOICE, in Zaffelare, Belgium. From that encounter developed a very close friendship.

Jerry DeewoodJerry and Sherrill Shaun stayed in close contact as Jerry expressed his desire to come to the States and cut a record that would be comprised of all gospel songs written by Sherrill Shaun. Jerry flew to the States and worked with Sherrill at his home in Cullman AL in preparation for the big event. Jerry wanted to recreate that feeling of Elvis' love for gospel music and Elvis' love for Sherrill's singing. Sherrill decided that this special record should be cut at the legendary SUN Studio in Memphis TN. Sherrill made all the arrangements with James Lott and the process began to take shape. They brought in the best of the best studio musicians: James Lott – guitar, B.B.Cunningham – bass, Pete Sully – drums and Peter Deewood (Jerry's son) – piano. The album "Jerry Deewood sings with and from Shaun Nielsen" stands for a unique combination of blends leading to an outstanding performance from both sides of the Atlantic. This CD reached a number ten in the top 20 of The Southern Gospel News (a standard used for the industry in the States). Jerry wantSun Recordsed to draw upon Sherrill's 50 plus year career in Southern Gospel Music; having sung with Jake Hess and the Imperials, Hovie Lister and the Statesmen, the Masters V, the Songfellows, the Plainsmen, the Singing Speer Family, VOICE, and his 14 year solo career while living in Denmark.

The first CD was so successful that Jerry decided to cut another CD that Sherrill and Brendawould feature some more gospel songs written by Sherrill. So, he got in touch with Sherrill again and they made plans to cut this record at B.B. Cunningham's Studio, Kelley Road Studio in Memphis TN. Again, they brought in the best of the best studio musicians – Eddie Webb, B.B. Cunningham, Pete Sully, Peter Deewood and backup vocals – Sherrill and Brenda Nielsen.

Shortly after Sherrill Nielsen was presented the Living Legend Award from the Alabama Country Gospel Music Association, the Belgian Artistic Promotion (B.A.P.) decided to present their Special Music Award 2009 to Jerry Deewood for his powerful contribution to music in general and for what he achieved on the U.S.A. music scene – especially Jerry and Sherrill in concert… "Jerry Deewood sings with and from Sherrill "Shaun" Nielsen and Friends".

Even though Jerry lost his dear friend "Sherrill Shaun" to inoperable Lung Cancer on December 10, 2010, he stays in contact with Brenda and reminisces about the great times they had together on this earth.

Today Jerry is still a very talented artist and musician, who is more than a full ambassador for his Belgian music. He has a new CD, soon to be released entitled "REBORN"…….we know that it will be GREAT.

You can contact Jerry for further information about his schedule, his appearances, his products and he will be more than willing to tell you how you can purchase the CD's and material he has for sale. Jerry can be reached at e-mail: website: address: Jerry Deewood Eigen Heerdlaan 51 Bruges Belgium
